RSS Services for FrontPage and Expression Sites
What is RSS?

RSS Services for FrontPage and Expression Sites

RSS (Rich Site Summary) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Sites that take advantage of using RSS feeds include news-related sites, weblogs and pretty much anything site developers are willing to publish as an RSS Feed. These feeds are available to whoever wants it. RSS allows for people to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites they are interested in. The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like Yahoo News.

"RSS is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts.

Users of RSS content use software programs called "feed readers" or "feed aggregators". The user subscribes to a feed by entering a link of the feed into the reader program. The reader can then check the user's subscribed feeds to see if any of those feeds have new content since the last time it was checked, and, if so, retrieve that content and present it to the user.

The initials "RSS" are variously used to refer to the following standards:

Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0)
Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91, RSS 1.0)
RDF Site Summary (RSS 0.9 and 1.0)
RSS formats are specified in XML (a generic specification for data formats). RSS delivers its information as an XML file called an "RSS feed," "web feed," "RSS stream," or "RSS channel"."*

* As defined in Wikipedia

How would I use RSS?

Basically there are two major ways to use RSS. You might wish to have your content available for other sites to pick up your RSS feeds. Alternatively you might want to include RSS feeds from other sites within your site. You may wish to do both. Take a look at a few other resources we have listed in the right hand column on this page.

There are a number of ways that we can incorporate RSS into your site. Some of your considerations are:

  • What format/type of rss do you prefer?
  • What type of server are you currently hosted on (Windows or Unix)..and what types of applications does it support?
  • How much... if any... customization would you want to the rss feeds?
  • Would you want the rss hosted on your current server, or would you like it hosted with us?

We can help you with all of the above statements and more. Feel free to look through some of the rss solutions available. You will notice in some cases that  the base prices for the rss applications themselves may even be free. We do not add a markup to those rss base prices. The fees that we charge are for installations, debugging, and customizations if needed.

After the rss applications are installed, we then turn everything over to you. You will have administrator rights to all rss functions. You then continue to develop your site in whatever manner you like. Our expertise is in the setting up of the software for these rss applications. Your role will be in maintaining and developing them based on your site viewers.

In addition to any of the rss applications we show, there are also many more available as well. Should you have an application you would like us to use for your site, just contact us for a quote
