I'm starting to do a website for a club here and not sure how to set up my ftp client. They used Frontpage to do everything, and I pretty much handcode everything myself. They were able to tell me what the username and password is, but that's all they knew. All they said was to go to the site, then in Internet Explorer, click on Page, then select Edit with Frontpage, then it will ask for the username and password. It worked. But my question, if I wanted to use an ftp client and not Frontpage, how would I set it up? I've tried setting it up as FTP, and also as HTTP, but I cannot log in. How does Frontpage do it? How do I set up my FTP client?
If your site uses any of the FrontPage Server Extensions, email, form processing, etc. then you need to use FrontPage Publisher from the menu bar.
If you use FTP the extensions will not work and the FPSE can become corrupted on the web server.
Even if your site doesn't use FPSE, I'd still use the FP Publisher's built in FTP to publish the website. FP remembers your log in details and makes publishing really simple, then I really like simple things (plus I don't need to remember the password/username either)
In addition to Mikes comments you can also use ftp by itself if you do not have FrontPage at all. (Bear in mind though that if you do..and the site you will be ftp'ing to uses the FrontPage extensions..using ftp will break them)
Using ftp *should* be as simple as telling the ftp client you use to connect to ftp.theactualdomainname.com and entering the user name and password.
I've tried using the domain with username and password, but when it logs in, it's blank. Doesn't show any of the folders or site files.
As for the site, it does not use FP Extensions at all. I use GoLive, and I used it to download the site from the web, and all works fine. But I cannot upload to it. Also, it's just a basic site right now, not much to it and no forms or anything, but when I rebuild it, I want to put more into the site, and actually have email forms where anyone can contact any of the board members or trainers through a simple email form, kind of like I did for one of the businesses I did a site for. I just can't get to the actual site through my ftp, it just comes up blank, even though it's logged in. I'm using WSFTP, which is my preference. And when hand coding, I use HTMLkit to build more simple sites. But being this site is going to be on the fairly complex side, I want to use GoLive, which I'm used to, since I'm starting from scratch. I've tried Frontpage, but I get lost in it. lol. I'm just an Adobe guy, Photoshop, GoLive, etc. They work together.
Another thing to add, when using WSFTP, it logs in, but doesn't have anything show up. But when I try the ftp in GoLive, it doesn't even connect. Says incorrect login, even though the info is the same as what I used in WSFTP. And for the host, it's through our local ISP, and have a call in to them, but because they don't have me listed yet as being the new webmaster for the club, they may not give me the info, as it's still under the other gal's name who is now over on the coast. She isn't really computer savy as well, and the way she used Frontpage was to just Edit with Frontpage, and when she figured out how to make the changes, she made the changes, then went to Save. That updated the page. She never used Publish.
Also, I'll just be using FP to make updates til I complete the new site, but when the site is complete, would prefer to use an ftp to upload the site. I just don't understand how Frontpage is uploading the site the way it does.
The person that was doing it before wasn't computer savy and doesn't know of any control panel. I'm used to control panels, as I have my own server and use cpanel. I'll just have to wait til I can contact the ISP. Just been so busy with work lately.
